Visiting Queenstown, New Zealand

Known for being one of the friendliest places in the world, Queenstown, located on New Zealand's South Island, is a beautiful resort destination that features four distinct seasons, making it perfect for an array of activities on a variety of landscapes. Queenstown has also been voted as one of the world's top travel spots and billed the "adventure capital" of New Zealand.

The Cuisine of Queenstown

Kiwi-style buffets are common at local restaurants in Queenstown as well as a vast selection of fine cuisine. Steak, lamb, venison, chicken, seafood, and pasta are all popular dishes with most restaurants offering vegetarian fare as well.

For international dining, visitors can choose from restaurants specializing in Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Mexican, British, and Irish foods.

Things to Do in Queenstown

There are plenty of shops and museums geared specifically toward tourists with many that are open seven days a week. And for the adventurous traveler, Queenstown visitors can experience many breathtaking activities such as bungee jumping, hang-gliding, sky diving, water-skiing, river surfing, white-water rafting as well as swimming, snorkeling and fishing. There are also plenty of hiking and four-wheel drive tours through the pristine backcountry.

There are also lots of family oriented activities in Queenstown such as beautiful lake cruises, visits to working sheep stations and trips aboard a vintage steamship. Visitors can play a few rounds of miniature golf or try their hand on the international-standard golf course resort Millbrook.

Queenstown offers a wide range of accommodations for all tastes and budgets. There are five-star hotels in the downtown areas as well as self-contained motels or apartments to let. There are also quaint bed and breakfasts to stay in or even luxurious resorts. The best prices on accommodations are usually from mid-April through mid-June.

Must-See Queenstown Locations

Queenstown is famous for its wineries as well as the Queenstown Gardens, which lies on a peninsula that juts out into the bay and is one of the most popular spots in town. Tourists can also rent cars and follow the coast of Lake Wakatipu beneath the shadows of the Remarkables, an aptly named mountain range.

Also be sure to see the Kiwi and Birdlife Park which is home to several native species as well as a reptile called the tuatara that is right from the time of the dinosaurs.

Queenstown Travel

Christchurch International Airport has connecting flights with various cities from San Francisco to Seoul to Singapore. From here travelers can get another flight into Queensland that only takes 45 minutes or so, or they can rent a car, make the six hour drive and see all of the fantastic scenery the region has to offer.

The downtown area of Queenstown is quaint and small enough to travel on foot and there are several modes of transportation to travel in and out of town. Visitors can rent a four-wheel drive vehicle, moped, or even a bike to traverse the area.

Queenstown Weather Conditions

During the summer months of November through February it's rather hot and dry in Queenstown with temperatures averaging 29 degrees Celsius (84F) during the days and evenings around 19 degrees Celsius (65F). Autumn arrives in Queenstown in March and lasts through April when the leaves turn to beautiful oranges and crimson reds. Autumn temperatures range from 15 - 25 Celsius (59 - 77F).

Winter, April through August, boasts clear, crisp days with snow falling in the mountainous regions and temperatures from 5 - 10 Celsius (41 - 50F). The spring months of September and October in Queenstown can be rainy at times with temperatures being slightly warmer than during the wintertime.
